Doppelkonzert: Jana Irmert + chra live Live im Fluc!

Jana Irmert

Jana Irmert is an acclaimed sound artist and composer based in Berlin. Her sonic explorations take on various forms - from live performance and multichannel composition to joint projects with filmmakers, dancers and visual artists. Being interested in phenomena like temporality and impermanence, alienation and the ecological crisis, she creates atmospheric audiovisual and sonic spaces “… that work with dis/harmony in such a way as to mirror our imperfect world at the moment.” (TJ Norris, Toneshift).

Her compositions and installations have been presented at international festivals and exhibitions such as the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, Sound Explicit (Slovenia), the I-Park Environmental Arts Biennale (USA), the Academy of Arts Berlin and the Banff Centre (Canada).

Jana Irmert’s album debut End of Absence was released in 2016, followed by her second album FLOOD in 2018. Both received critical praise from various music blogs and magazines and have been internationally broadcast on RAI 3, Resonance FM, RTVE and BBC Radio 3.

Jana is also co-founder of Studio am Fluss, a Berlin-based company specialising in sound for picture and has contributed sound design and music for feature films, documentaries, VR experiences and video installations. For her experimental soundtrack for the feature documentary “Stress” by Florian Baron she received the German Documentary Film Music Award 2019.

Recent collaborations have included projects with Jóhann Jóhannsson, Klaus Maria Brandauer and Christopher Chaplin. She is currently working on her third solo album.

Chra

On her latest release, chra aka Christina Nemec is sketching out a psychogeographical map, that guides you to the border of the internal and external world - `on a fateful morning´ lets you enter a sphere where the imaginary and the subliminal cross. Evoking abstract images that transcend reality, chra installs an autarchic time-and-space-continuum of vague, nocturnal beauty. Pastose bass drones, airy ambient synths and processed audio-samples form a hypnotic stream that lets you enter an altered state of mind. By subtly intertwining musical and non musical sounds chra is weaving an intensely atmospheric, poetic tableau of emptied spaces left to our imagination. It’s the pulse of arcane memories that is filling these sonic landscapes, operating deep within our subconscious.

Collection of exclusive remixes of tracks from the chra albums ‘Empty Airport’ and ‘on a fateful morning’ previously released on Editions Mego.

»Empty Airport«, Chra´s (CHRISTINA NEMEC) first LP on Editions Mego may be read as a reference to Brian Eno´s ambient classic, though this time we find ourselves in a territory of transit that sounds like a dystopian swan song on civilizatoric debris - a heteropia in which the listener restores himself in a surrounding that is emptied of human remains, having left just some ghostly echoes behind.
Nemec, who is a member of various band projects like Shampoo Boy (together with Peter Rehberg and Christian Schachinger) or the female berzerker formation SV Damenkraft, has succeeded in producing a significant LP, that merges dark techno and industrial with found sounds and ambient scapes, resulting in a compositoric minimalism that is ushering us in a state of existential trance.
